Short Description

The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of the complex relationship between systems of education and the society in which these systems are located. The unit will study a number of theories concerning the form and use of education systems. By studying historical and more contemporary examples, you will be introduced to the varying social influences that shape school systems.

Students will have 10 hours of lectures, and 10 hours of seminars.

Assessment

One multiple choice question exam to assess overall course understanding (30% of final grade); one 1500 word assignment exploring an educational issue (70% of final grade).

Course Aims

The aims of the course are as follows:

 

■ To explore the relationship between education and industrialisation, education and

democracy, education and autocracy;

■ To analyse the role of cultures in shaping the type and content of schooling discussed in the unit;

■ To introduce students to key research and analysis skills in education as a social science.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

■ Explain the ways in which specific nations have developed education systems using historical and more contemporary examples.

■ Discuss the ways in which culture and social norms can shape the form and content of schooling.

■ Source, select and discuss appropriate literature to inform your understanding of the education systems explored in the course.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

The minimum requirement for the award of credits is the submission of at least 75% by weight of the course's summative assessment.
