Short Description

This course is suitable for teachers who are interested in developing understanding of research and scholarship practices in English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It is designed for participants who would like to gain and improve skills involved in planning, conducting and disseminating EAP research and scholarship. A key focus of the course is exploring how research and scholarship improves EAP practitioners' teaching and learning practice.

Assessment

Blog entries (2 x 750 words) - 30%

Written research/scholarship proposal (3,500 words) - 70%

Course Aims

Specific aims of the course are:  

■ to develop awareness of what influences engagement with EAP scholarship and research globally  

■ to introduce principles, methods and practicalities involved in designing, implementing and disseminating practitioner-led EAP research and scholarship 

■ to raise knowledge of a range EAP research and scholarship outputs  

■ to provide frameworks for appraising research and scholarship impact and integrity 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ critically discuss routes into, opportunities and barriers in EAP research and scholarship 

■ select appropriate research and scholarship approaches for a range of contexts 

■ produce a proposal for a contained scholarship/research project in EAP 

■ evaluate EAP research and scholarship in terms of integrity and impact 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
