Short Description

Are you interested in developing your understanding of practices and skills required for teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP)? This course covers principles and practices for lesson planning, teaching and providing assessment for and of learning in the specialised area of EAP. You will develop your skills and knowledge for teaching in a range of EAP contexts and for a variety of lesson types.

Course Aims

This course aims to:  

 

■ develop knowledge and practical skills for planning, teaching and assessing student's work in a range of English for academic purposes

■ enhance skills in selecting and adapting appropriate teaching resources and staging and scaffolding learning

■ apply knowledge of intertextuality, multimodality and learning strategies in lesson design  

■ introduce frameworks and approaches for monitoring and providing formative and summative feedback.  

■ provide opportunities to explore learning and teaching practices in EAP, to apply learning to micro-teaching practice, and to reflect on teaching. 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

 

■ Reflect critically on and articulate in rationales and reflections principles underpinning EAP lesson design and classroom practices  

■ analyse and apply principles in the planning of EAP lessons to develop academic literacies, language and skills

■ apply frameworks in providing meaningful formative and summative feedback 

■ use learning in micro-teaching and reflect on EAP classroom practices 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
