This course develops essential English language and academic skills to support your undergraduate study. You will research and write academic assignment types typically found in the MVLS subject areas. Listening and speaking are practised with a focus on interactional skills.

One x 1 hour and two x 2 hour seminars per week as scheduled on MyCampus.

2 x 30min individual tutorial sessions by arrangement with tutor.

Overall IELTS 6 or language proficiency at this level, or basic level of English adequate to cope with undergraduate study.

This course is open to students on the Certificate of Higher Education (Pre-Med, Pre-Dent).

EAP 1 (Semester 1) EAS1001 and EAP 1 (Semester 2) EAS1002

EAP2 for MVLS (EAS1006), Biology 1A (BIOL1001) and Chemistry 1 (CHEM1001)

Summary and commentary writing set exercise (400 words) - 25%

Listening, note-taking and summary writing task (90 minutes) - 25%

Seminar discussion (10 minutes per student) - 25%

Reading and summary writing task (90 minutes) - 25%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ An individual discussion with a tutor as an alternative to the seminar discussion.

■ There is no alternative to the summary and commentary, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ There is no alternative to the writing tasks, but extra time and/or a separate room may be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments).

This course aims to:

■ develop English language and study skills of international students on a foundation programme in MVLS in preparation for their Year 1 undergraduate programme;

■ take an integrative approach to language and skills development, enabling students to participate fully on their undergraduate courses;

■ develop students' understanding of UK academic culture and their awareness and knowledge of the written and spoken discourses expected in study of medicine, dentistry and veterinary science.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ select, critically evaluate and summarise in both written and oral form, information derived from a variety of listening and reading contexts;

■ research and take part in seminar discussions;

■ structure and communicate scientific ideas in writing and speaking in a way that is clear to a variety of audiences;

■ apply improved interpersonal and interactional skills, for example, in seminars, group based work and 1:1 situations.
