This course reviews essential English language and academic skills to support undergraduate studies. Listening, reading, and speaking are all practised with a strong focus on researching and writing academic assignments, typically found in, but not exclusive to, Arts and Social Sciences.  

5 hours per week (comprising  2 x 2hr seminars and 1 x 1hr lecture) over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Overall IELTS 6 or language proficiency at this level, or basic level of English adequate to cope with undergraduate study. Maximum score overall IELTS 7 with no sub-test less than 6.

The course is open to visiting students only, Erasmus or International, whose first language is not English.

Essay (1,500 words) - 50%

Seminar Discussion (25 minutes) - 25%

Presentation (10 minutes) - 25%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ An individual discussion with a tutor as an alternative to the seminar discussion.

■ A recorded presentation and a one-to-one question and answer session with a tutor as an alternative to the presentation

■ There is no alternative to the essay, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor

It is the default expectation that all courses will offer opportunities for reassessment or deferred assessment. Where it is not possible to offer this in some assessment components, the grade achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade, and any exceptions for this course are described below.

This course aims to:  

■ develop students' understanding of UK academic culture and their knowledge of the written and spoken academic discourses typically found in Arts and Social Sciences 

■ strengthen interactional skills for effective participation in academic seminars, lectures, tutorials and intercultural group discussions 

■ develop English language and key academic skills to support students in their academic studies.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Select, analyse, summarise, and critically evaluate information and arguments from various academic sources.

■ Write clear, coherent academic essays that present well-supported arguments and adhere to academic referencing conventions.

■ Write and present concise texts summarising analysis and arguments, following academic conventions.

■ Participate effectively in an academic lecture and contribute to seminar discussions by analysing, summarising and evaluating concepts and arguments with reference to academic sources.

■ Use spoken academic English to present detailed information and arguments clearly and interact coherently with an audience.

■ Apply interactional skills to negotiate meaning in intercultural group discussions.
