Short Description

This course provides a knowledge base in the etiology and spread or orofacial infections.

Assessment

Written examination (120 minutes) - mixture of short answer questions and single best answer questions 50%;

Oral Clinical Assessment (viva) 50% (45 minutes) (Both Schedule A).

These two assessments together will cover all of the 4 ILOs.

Critical knowledge will be assessed in practice via the viva assessment as this requires the students to assimilate a clinical case, diagnose it and treatment plan the care.

Course Aims

1. This course aims to allow for the acquisition and integration of knowledge with regard to the aetiology and mechanism of spread of oral infection

2. This course aims to allow for the acquisition of knowledge with regards to the methods of treating oral infection

3. This course aims to allow for the acquisition of knowledge with regards to the importance of diagnostic aids in oral infection

4. This course aims to allow for the acquisition of knowledge with regards to the management of the complications of oral infection

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

On completion of the course the student will be able to demonstrate critical knowledge of the:

1. Aetiology and pathogenesis of oral infections.

2. Therapeutic and surgical management of orofacial infection.

3. Complications that can occur secondary to orofacial infections.

4. Microbiology of orofacial infections.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course’s summative assessment.
