Short Description

This course is the core component of postgraduate Dental programmes: MSc (Dent Sci) Primary Dental Care; MSc (Dent Sci) Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.

Timetable

Normally classes will two days per month and there will be time for face to face contact in the form of Seminars, formative essay feedback, as well as private study towards Summative Essay work.

Co-requisites

Must be taken with Course 'MSc (Dent Sci) Core 40' on the MSc Primary Dental Care or the MSc (Dent Sci) Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.

Assessment

Class essay: One 3000 word essay at week 45. 40% weighting. Double marked, agreed final mark. Feedback to student.

Examination: at week 45. 4 clinical scenarios. 60% weighting.

Course Aims

To facilitate the acquisition and integration of a knowledge base in basic science, health science and research science to enable students to enhance their careers in clinical dentistry and maintain their clinical practice at 'special interest level'.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of the effect of nutrition on oral and dental disease (4)

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of the mechanisms and causes of caries and periodontal disease (8)

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of the epidemiology and health promotion in relation to general and oral health. (4)

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of the functions of the aerodigestive tract, including eating, swallowing, speech and associated reflexes. (4)

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
