In this course, students conduct practice-based research on a topic relevant to the Creative Arts and Industries programme. The research may utilise any of the creative and critical practices relevant to the degree, and may consist of one central piece of practice research or a portfolio of related artefacts. This will be accompanied by a piece of reflective writing on the practice research.

3 hour workshop in Junior Honours year

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Portfolio of practice research (determined on a case-by-case basis) - 70%

■ Critical Reflection (2500 words) - 30%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the portfolio of practice research, but a flexible deadline and extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

■ There is no alternative to the critical reflection, but a flexible deadline and extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor. 

This course aims to:

■ Enable student to construct a practice research project on an appropriate topic, which is clear and realistic in scope, and seeks to make a contribution both to student's own learning and to debates within their chosen field

■ develop the student's independent practice research skills

■ facilitate the production an extended piece (or portfolio) of practice research, with evidence of original research

■ develop the student's ability to reflect critically on their practice research including evaluating their peers' work-in-progress

■ develop the student's professional standards for the presentation of practice research material

■ use the supervision process to develop skills in communication and in using feedback (both oral and written)

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ evidence a practical understanding of the relationship between creative practice and intellectual enquiry;

■ exhibit a range of transferable research skills including the ability to: organise time and resources effectively; identify and access relevant source materials; identify appropriate research methods for the project.

■ communicate effectively with their supervisor and use feedback constructively and reflectively in producing the final work

■ evince a thorough knowledge and understanding of the chosen topic and a critical awareness of the relationship of their own practice research to other work in the field.

■ present research information and argument in creative, communicative and intellectually coherent forms
