The realms of culture are integral to debating, trialling, promoting and fulfilling revolutionary change. This course seeks to acknowledge and analyse cultural-activist engagements with a history of dissent and uprising. It draws on a range of different practices from around the world and the examples upon which it draws may come, for example, from music, cinema, theatre, social media, dance or fanzines.

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into MA Creative Arts and Industries, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes who qualify under the University's 25% regulation

The standard assessments for this course:

■ Essay (1500 words) - 40%

■ Programming assignment with critical reflection (2500 words) - 60%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the essay, but flexible deadlines and extra time can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions). This is a group writing assignment, but students with disabilities can opt to complete this on their own at a reduced word count.

■ There is no alternative to the programming assignment with critical reflection, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course aims to:

■ Acquaint students with how culture contributes to and is shaped by political and social uprising and radical dissent

■ Introduce a range of different forms and scales of revolutionary culture from within their broader historical and geopolitical contexts of production

■ Engender an appreciation of various debates that link aesthetics and creative practice to freedom and change

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Socio-historically contextualize the role culture has played in various political struggles around the world in written and oral form

■ Evaluate key theoretical approaches to culture's position amidst revolutionary activity

■ Curate a programme of revolutionary cultural material that engages with past and current debates about the efficacy of creative output to instigate change
