The aim of this course is to examine representations of crisis situations across literary and visual genres and cultural contexts, both in the present moment and diachronically. The course looks beyond "crisis" as a media buzzword to explore what constitutes crisis narratives, how crisis narratives are constructed, and how they make an impact on individuals and societies.

1 x 1hour Lecture; 1 x 1hour Seminar per week over 11 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Type of Assessment

This course aims to:

■ introduce different theoretical approaches to representations of crisis and cross cultures.

■ analyse and compare different representations of crisis in literature, film and other media, both in the present and diachronically;

■ contextualise narratives of crisis within discussion of topics such as cultural memory, exile, narratives of illness and aging, gender, and conflict.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Define, investigate, and analyse how narratives of crisis are constructed and disseminated across different literary and cinematic traditions, genres and cultural contexts, both in the present moment and diachronically

■ Employ different theoretical frameworks and approaches to the analysis of representations of crisis situations in literature, film and across media

■ Exercise critical judgement in evaluating sources of information and constructing meaning

■ Articulate and defend sustained, sound, and complex arguments about the topic drawing from a variety of sources and cultural/artistic contexts (both orally and in written form)

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
