Short Description
Following on from Chemistry 1, this course covers further topics and consolidates the basic theories of chemistry and develops laboratory and problem-solving skills. This is an exit point for CHEM2001.
Timetable
Tuesday, Thursday, and some Mondays - 11.00 am; laboratory one 3 hour session (2.00-5.00 pm) per week; tutorials as arranged.

Course Aims
Following on from Chemistry-1 to consolidate students' knowledge of the facts, theories, concepts, applications, development and importance of fundamental molecular chemistry; to further enhance skills in - handling numbers, units, equations, diagrams and abstract ideas; analysing data; prioritising information; making deductions; taking decisions; making and justifying proposals; and in communicating and reporting clearly; to encourage interest in the subject and its interaction with other sciences; to give further experience in the safe and accurate handling of chemical substances and apparatus; to encourage development of learning strategies; to generate awareness of chemical factors in industrial and other decision making processes.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the course students will be able to
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental facts and experimental basis of modern molecular chemistry
- solve elementary problems of a numeric or logical nature in the chemistry context
- demonstrate practical skills in chemical techniques.
