Short Description

The aims of this course are: to introduce the orthography, phonology and grammatical structure of the early Gaelic language; to develop awareness of the historical development of the Gaelic language in its earliest written forms; to provide a basic knowledge of the early Gaelic language.

Timetable

Class will meet for 1.5 hours twice weekly in semester 1.

Assessment

The mark for this module will be determined on the basis of class exercises throughout (45%), general preparation and participation (5%), and a class test at the end the semester (50% each).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, the student should be able: to demonstrate a basic understanding of key aspects of Early Gaelic (Old Irish); to perform translation and grammar exercises under test conditions.
