The course will provide students with training in practical and analytical skills relevant for research in immunology and Infection Biology.
This course is made up of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and workshops which will take place in semester 1.
Requirements of Entry
Practical Skills Assessment - 20%
Written report (on practical skills task) (~750 words) - 30%
Oral Presentation - 50%
Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
The practical skills assessment cannot be reassessed.
■ Expose students to and provide them with the opportunity to develop generic practical skills required for research in immunology and infection biology.
■ Equip students with the tools for understanding and analysing current literature in infection biology and immunology.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Critically analyse and perform calculations relevant to experimental techniques covered in the course.
■ Critically discuss the concepts of accuracy and precision and demonstrate these in simple practical skills e.g. pipetting.
■ Extract defining information from primary research manuscripts and evaluate the results and conclusions critically
■ Critically discuss the purpose and use of experimental techniques covered in the course within relevant research literature
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
