The course comprises a variety of teaching and learning approaches including lectures, PBL sessions, problem sessions, paper analysis sessions and presentations, covering the molecular and genetic basis of disease.
Normally, five hours each week for 10 weeks, usually on Monday and Friday.
Requirements of Entry
This course is only open to students on the Biomedical Sciences postgraduate taught programmes.
Analysis of scientific paper class exam (50%) and poster presentation (50%).
The course aims:
■ to impart up-to-date information on human disease and health issues and how these might be investigated at molecular, genetical and cellular levels;
■ to provide practical experience in evaluating the literature and exploring information databases
■ to provide experience in giving presentations.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to, with critical reference to published research:
■ produce high-quality research reports and posters;
■ identify, synthesise, summarise and critically-evaluate prior research findings in a specific area;
■ critically-evaluate and analyse scientific data;
■ use computers effectively to search databases, analyse data and present research findings in the form of written reports and posters;
■ demonstrate proficiency in planning and managing time effectively by prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines;
■ work co-operatively with colleagues to develop interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
