Short Description

This course aims to develop students' understanding of the role of research in sectors within the broad arts and humanities areas, as well as prepare students to complete an independent research project. The course highlights the value of academic and sector partnerships through exposure to recent and current collaborative research projects with a range of institutions and research settings. It will also develop students' critical understanding of appropriate approaches to research design and methods for research in arts and humanities contexts.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Expose students to diverse interdisciplinary perspectives on research practices across the arts and humanities sectors;

■ Provide students with the necessary methodological tools and approaches needed to examine, evaluate and critically analyse contexts within this broad area and their home subject;

■ Engage students in nuanced consideration and critical reflection of relevant research methods and approaches in professional practice and research;

■ Familiarise students with principles of good practice and integrity in research design and execution;

■ Introduce students to core concepts of research design and provide an opportunity to apply these in preparing a dissertation proposal in their chosen specialism.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Discuss and critically analyse the shape and purpose of research in arts and humanities area;

■ Evaluate relevant principles of research design and methodological concepts and procedures and apply these to a variety of settings as appropriate to their chosen specialisation;

■ Articulate principles and practices of research ethics and data management;

■ Evaluate and synthesise relevant literature and methodological practice in the development of a robust and applicable research inquiry;

■ Define how the scope and feasibility of research is limited by time, resource and staffing.
