Short Description

This course will apply contemporary theories of landscape archaeology to the Mediterranean, with an emphasis on the interpretation of primary landscape data. Case studies will be taken from across the Mediterranean, and from periods from the Palaeolithic to the Modern period.

Timetable

6 seminars (two hours each) and 3 labs (two hours each) (1 per week over 9 weeks). 2 hours of individual tutorial with staff, to be arranged when needed.

Reassessment

In accordance with the University's Code of Assessment reassessments are normally set for all courses which do not contribute to the honours classifications. For non honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students, and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions are listed below in this box.

Course Aims

This course will:

■ investigate Mediterranean archaeological landscapes by means of a series of thematic case studies

■ apply a range of archaeological landscape theories to specific cases

■ carry out analyses of past landscapes using a range of sources and techniques (e.g. survey and excavation data, environmental data, historical documents, ethnographic accounts)

■ develop an understanding of the processes of managing and interpreting landscape data (e.g. through databases and Geographic Information Systems)

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ demonstrate an understanding of the most significant archaeological issues concerning Mediterranean landscapes (assessed in worksheet, presentation and project)

■ demonstrate the ability to apply theories of landscape archaeology to specific cases and produce new insights and original analyses (assessed in worksheet, presentation and project)

■ integrate information from a variety of disciplines, such as archaeology, environmental science, ethnography and history (assessed in the project)

■ produce their own landscape analyses using independent research, integration of different sources, and appropriate analytical tools such as GIS (assessed in the project)

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
