Short Description

The course provides an introduction to the field of applied sport and exercise psychology, adopting a contemporary, person-centred approach which balances a focus on goal achievement and performance enhancement with humanistic principles and self-awareness. The course goes beyond theory by offering a space to develop and practise key interpersonal and psychological skills in a supportive environment.

 

Each session will include a core skill, guided resources and practice opportunities tailored to the participants' contexts. Topics include self-awareness and reflective practice, helping participants to explore their personal values and biases, as well as person-centred communication skills that foster empathy and understanding when supporting others.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ introduce students to person-centred applied psychology as it relates to the field of sport and exercise psychology and counselling;

■ provide opportunities to practise key interpersonal and psychological skills in a supportive environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ describe how person-centred psychology can be applied within sport and exercise counselling;

■ apply basic person-centred communication skills to support others within sport and exercise contexts.
