Short Description

This course introduces students to music that will be played during the first part of the orchestral season. We shall examine a wide range of repertoire in detail, and will also explore relevant artistic and organisational issues that concern orchestras today.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Analyse a selection of music from a wide range of currently available repertoire.

■ Examine the relevant artistic and organisational issues that underpin the functioning of orchestras.

■ Develop students' understanding of orchestral music in performance.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically evaluate and discuss a selection of musical works.

■ Understand internal structuring compositional techniques.

■ Locate musical works within the history and development of the musical canon.

■ Understand how an orchestra that is capable of performing sophisticated musical pieces is maintained.
