Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

To enable students to achieve a basic level of communicative competency and linguistic accuracy in the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening to Spanish. The course should develop students' knowledge and understanding of the structure of the Spanish language, enable them to apply this knowledge practically, in speaking activities with other students, simultaneously developing their communication skills and encouraging autonomous learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

- Talk firstly about themselves and then about another person (friend/relation etc.); say who they are, how old they are, what they work at etc.; say what time they get up at, have breakfast, go to work etc.; say what they do during the week, at the weekends etc.; describe themselves.
Students produce a piece of written work (roughly 100 words) similar to the following:

- Last year in
Spain (or Latin America) you became friendly with someone whom you then invited to come to Scotland. Write him/her a letter in which you tell him/her about the people he/ she will meet (ie your friends and family) when they come to visit.
- Write the dialogue of a conversation which takes place in a bar between a customer and a nosy waiter/waitress (or the other way around).

- For a computer dating agency, write out information about yourself and the type of partner you are looking for.

Students should be able to:

- Talk about groups of people (sometimes including themselves); say what they do, what they drink, where they work etc.

- Talk about likes and dislikes; say what things they like/don't like (doing); say what other people like/don't like (doing)

Students produce a piece of written work (100-150 words) similar to the following:

- A conversation in a cafe in which two feminists discuss the topic of "men" or two men, one a male chauvinist and one a "modern man", discuss the topic of "women".

- Write a paragraph for the local newspaper in
Murcia comparing and contrasting "los escoceses" with "los espaƱoles".
