Short Description

This is a course for beginners or students interested in developing their own work covering practical aspects of oil painting, acrylic, watercolour and gouache. Individual tuition and support will be offered and students will be encouraged to try a variety of materials, learning how to mix colour and how to apply paint. Materials are not provided.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.

To develop an understanding of the process of painting in a variety of media.

To improve students' awareness, insight and perception.

To develop technical and visual skills required in art making.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

Create more complex artwork through an improved understanding of a range of painting processes.

Critically analyze how to use perspective and create structured compositions.

Practically demonstrate their acquired technical and visual skills in a variety of different painting techniques.
