The James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC)
The James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC) celebrates its 20th Anniversary in 2026 and is one of the largest and most highly utilised academic open access semiconductor fabs in the UK.
The facility processes a broad range of materials, which it makes it one of the most versatile cleanrooms in the UK. This versatility enables it to support research across multiple application areas, which fosters inter disciplinary collaboration and supports heterogeneous integration across different materials sets. The JWNC is home to the Quantum Enabled Position Navigation and Timing Hub (QEPNT), the Critical Technologies Accelerator (CTA), a large and diverse range of programs and stand alone research grants, and multiple spin outs including Quantcore and Quantrologee.
Also central to JWNC’s success is its unique partnership with Kelvin Nanotechnology Ltd (KNT). KNT was set up as a wholly owned University company to allow industry to benefit from the outcomes of the large body of JWNC’s funded research programs and infrastructure. KNT is a proven and scaleable delivery mechanism, who have supported over 150 companies in the last 3 years, ranging from startups and SMEs to multinational corporations.
