Cell Block Science

Cell Block Science is a unique public engagement with research partnership, promoting STEM in prison learning centres.

It was established by the Public Engagement team at the University of St Andrews in 2016. 

Currently on offer in the Glasgow area at HMP Low Moss and HMP Shotts, the programme builds on the successful pilot project and aims to provide hands-on science inspiration for learners within a prison environment.

While this activity is most suited to researchers with some engagement experience expressions of interest are also invited from PhD students.

Expressions of interest 2018-19

Expressions of interest are invited from research individuals and/or groups to be part of Cell Block Science 2019.

To be involved with Cell Block Science ideally participants need to hold a PVG (and preferably an Enhanced Disclosure) but this can be arranged before a first session. All participants have travel costs to and from the delivery venue covered, and full training and guidance will be provided on activity development and delivery.

Prison delivery dates for 2018 /19 are:

  • HMP Low Moss. Tuesdays from 16th October – 4th December 2018 - completed
  • HMP Shotts. Thursdays from 18th October – 6th December 2018 - completed
  • 12th/14th February – 2nd/4th April 2019 - completed
  • October-December 2019 - applications welcomed
