The Living Laboratory has kicked off two community-led arts projects in Govan, inviting local residents to take part in the creation of a mosaic tile artwork and a woven tapestry. These collaborative initiatives aim to create meaningful opportunities for people to connect, share their voices, and actively engage with the ongoing development of the Health Innovation Hub and precision medicine cluster.

Artistic Mosaic Tiling: Showcasing Govan’s Healthcare Legacy

The first project launched at St Saviour’s Primary School, where Georgina Aitchison (Community Engagement Officer) and Kerstin Doig (Engagement & STEM Officer) joined forces with charity Impact Arts to lead a hands-on workshop with Primary 6 pupils. After exploring cells under a microscope, the pupils drew inspiration from DNA, molecules, and microscopic imagery to create vibrant artwork.

These early artworks will inspire a larger mosaic to be developed with local schools and community groups. Once completed, the mosaic will be displayed at locations across Govan, including the Health Innovation Hub. Each tile will represent a pivotal moment in medical history, coming together to form a larger artwork that highlights the past, present, and future of healthcare innovation in Govan and beyond.

Off Loom Weave: Weaving Precision Medicine into Govan’s Future

The second project kicked off at Gilded Lily, where the team met with local women to introduce the Living Laboratory, precision medicine, and the Health Innovation Hub. This was followed by a creative discussion on weaving styles, imagery, and storytelling techniques to help shape the design and direction of a hand-woven tapestry.

Once completed, this tapestry will symbolise how the University of Glasgow’s precision medicine cluster and the Health Innovation Hub are being woven into the fabric of Govan. Drawing from the area's rich weaving heritage, the artwork will be a vibrant visual centrepiece and a hands-on educational tool for the local community.
