The University of Glasgow has been shortlisted in four categories at the Scottish Design Awards for work developed through Museums in the Metaverse, recognising design excellence spanning craft, visualisation, social impact and client leadership.

The shortlisted projects include [un]box, developed with Lateral North, which has been nominated in the Craft category for its integration of immersive digital technology, physical interpretation and bespoke fabrication within a mobile museum kiosk.

Museums in the Metaverse: Environments, created in collaboration with Float, Digital Ltd and Lateral North, has been shortlisted in the Visualisation category. The project uses virtual reality to expand access to museum collections, enabling audiences to explore detailed digital artefacts within carefully designed environments that go beyond the limits of physical display.

The initiative has also been recognised in the Design for Good category, reflecting Museums in the Metaverse’s focus on widening access to cultural heritage by removing geographical, economic and physical barriers to engagement. Led by the University of Glasgow, the project enables audiences to experience and curate digital collections that are often unseen or inaccessible in traditional museum settings.

In addition, Museums in the Metaverse has been shortlisted for Client of the Year, recognising its collaborative approach to commissioning and delivering a joined up programme of design work in partnership with creative and digital teams.

Now in its 29th year, the Scottish Design Awards celebrate design excellence across Scotland, recognising architecture, creativity and the people behind it across 34 categories.
