University of Glasgow Graduate, Colin Cameron (BL, 1957) has received an honorary lifetime membership of the Law Society of Scotland.

Following his graduation from Glasgow, Colin moved to Malawi, where he became instrumental in campaigning and negotiating Malawian independence from British rule. He then went on to serve in Malawi’s Legislative Council and National Assembly as a Minister.

Colin joined Malawi’s first post-independence cabinet in 1964, resigning later that year in protest of then Prime Minister Banda’s re-introduction of preventative detention.

Colin eventually returned to Scotland, establishing a successful legal practice in Ayrshire, and continuing to practice law until his retirement in 2003. Throughout this time, he helped maintain strong links between Scotland and Malawi. In 1994 Colin was invited to become Malawi’s Honorary Consul to Scotland and served in the role until 2009.

Colin officially received his award at the Law Society’s AGM on 27th May 2021.

The University is always delighted to see our world changing alumni acknowledged for their accomplishments and congratulates Colin on this outstanding achievement.
