University of Glasgow graduate elected to lead Scottish wing of the Labour party

The University is delighted to congratulate Anas Sarwar MSP (BDS 2005) on being elected the Leader of Scottish Labour. Anas is the first Muslim and non-white person to lead a political party in the United Kingdom, following in the footsteps of his father, who became the UK’s first Muslim MP in 1997.

Anas is also a Parliamentary Internship Provider through the University of Glasgow’s John Smith Centre, which provides students the opportunity to work closely with high-profile elected representatives from across Scotland and the political spectrum.

The University is always pleased to recognise and celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni, and we wish Anas all the best in his new role.
