Dr John Gordon (BSc 1985) was elected as an International Fellow by the Royal Society of Edinburgh this year for his contributions to Earth Sciences and Chemistry. Dr Gordon attended the admission ceremony on 16th June at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), where he accepted his Fellowship as one of 40 new Fellows in 2025.

John currently serves as Chair of the Chemistry Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Prior to this, John dedicated nearly 30 years to his work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, where he achieved the prestigious rank of Laboratory Fellow.

As a specialist in inorganic and organometallic chemistry, Dr Gordon is internationally recognised for his work in clean and renewable energy chemistry. His role as International Fellow with RSE is among other significant recognitions for his contributions to his field, such as his 2022 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Program R&D award for his "outstanding work demonstrating improved catalysts for the dehydrogenation of high-capacity hydrogen carriers"

In addition to his research, Dr. Gordon is actively involved in science outreach and mentoring, with a strong commitment to supporting the career development of early-career scientists.
