This course will provide students with a sound basic knowledge of the Chinese language and the more important fundamentals of Chinese grammar, writing, speaking, including elements of translation and the writing of Chinese characters. It will provide access to a range of learning resources for the purpose of studying Chinese language and culture.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable for Honours courses
Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
This course aims to:
■ introduce students to the target language and prepare them to move directly into level 2;
■ ensure students can understand, read, write and speak the target language at beginners level;
■ ensure students can use the target language confidently at levels A1 and A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and that towards the end of the academic year students are able to understand and produce material at B1 level of the Framework;
■ help prepare students to use the target language in everyday situations.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ read, comprehend, analyse and translate beginner-level texts of a variety of styles in the target language;
■ speak with confidence in the target language on a range of topics reflecting work done on the course, using all the basic structures, idiom, and vocabulary correctly;
■ respond with confidence to questions posed both orally and in writing, using the basic grammatical structures of the target language accurately and appropriately;
■ produce texts written in the target language that show an active command of vocabulary, grammar and idiom at beginners level reflecting the work contained in the course materials.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
