This course explores the ways in which queer subjects have been represented in contemporary (usually 21st century) Latin American literature and film. It focuses mostly on Argentina but there is scope for you to examine works from different countries in Latin America as part of the assessment. The course has been co-designed with students and requires active engagement in continuing to shape it from anyone who chooses to take it.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Short piece of writing suitable for a general audience (750 words) - 20%

■ Oral Presentation - Podcast (5 minutes) - 10%

■ Essay (3000 words) - 70%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ A reduced audience or alternative space can be offered as a reasonable adjustment to the Oral Presentation.

■ There is no alternative to the short piece of writing, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

This course aims to:

■ introduce students to theoretical concepts from the field of Queer Studies;

■ analyse texts from Latin America written by and about people who live queer lives;

■ analyse films made by or that represent queer people living in Latin America;

■ teach students practical skills that might be directly applicable to a career in arts administration.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ synthesise theoretical arguments from the field of Queer Studies;

■ analyse the ways in which queer people are represented within written and visual texts;

■ communicate complex ideas about queer subjectivities in a way that makes them accessible to a wider public audience.
