This course consists of a variety of language teaching, including translation into and from English, plus exercises in the target language such as essay writing, summary and language analysis. This course forms year 2 of a 2-year programme

Two hours weekly throughout semesters 1 and 2 as scheduled on MyCampus.

Teaching will take place in weeks 1-5 and 7-11. Week 6 will be dedicated to guided independent study.

Portuguese Honours Spoken Language (Senior), PORT4005

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Assessed language exercises (4 best marks over junior and senior Honours) - 10%

■ In-person class test (50 minutes) -20%

■ In-person exam (2 x 2 hours) - 70%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the assessed language exercises, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ There is no alternative to the Class test/ Written examination, but extra time/alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustment.

■ There is no alternative to the in-person exam, but extra time/alternative space can be offered as reasonable adjustment.

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course aims to:

■ improve students' stylistic skills in the production of grammatically accurate written work in the target language; 

■ work with sophisticated examples of language usage across different registers; 

■ consolidate the key skills required to write in the target language at an advanced level.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ compose a linguistically accurate piece of writing in the target language, including use of appropriate grammatical structures, register and vocabulary.

■ use appropriate presentational and rhetorical skills in writing in the target language.

■ translate the content of diverse sources written in English and/or in the target language.

■ respond appropriately to passages written in a broad range of styles and registers in the target language.

■ Use the linguistic skills required to complete translation and writing in the target language tasks unassisted in person.
