Short Description

This course builds on the linguistic skills acquired at Beginners Latin and will bring students to the level that, at completion, they can begin reading Latin literature in the original language.

Course Aims

The course aims to:

■ Further expand knowledge of Latin vocabulary and morphology.

■ Introduce the syntax of complex Latin sentences.

■ Consolidate reading skills through acquaintance with lightly adapted passages of continuous Latin prose and verse.

■ Explain the linguistic features met in reading Latin.

■ Enable the translation from English into correct Latin single words and brief phrases.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students will be able to:

■ Apply their knowledge of Latin grammar, morphology and syntax, and specified Latin vocabulary, to translate a wide range of complex sentences from Latin into idiomatic English.

■ Translate unseen passages of continuous Latin prose into idiomatic English.

■ Explain the linguistic features met in reading both seen and unseen Latin passages and sentences.

■ Supply the correct form of individual Latin words and phrases.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
