Short Description
An independent research project, on a topic chosen by the student, written in Italian, with equivalent status to an Honours Option.

Assessment
The standard assessments for this course are:
■ Written essay (2600 words) - 60%
■ Reflective journal (400 words) - 30%
■ Viva/oral exam (12 minutes) - 10%
If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:
■ Invigilated online oral examination as alternative to Viva/oral exam
■ There is no alternative to the written essay but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).
■ There is no alternative to the Reflective journal, but extensions to the deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Course Aims
This course aims to:
■ build on the linguistic and cultural experience of the Year Abroad in Italy through providing the opportunity to undertake independent research on a topic chosen by the student;
■ develop confidence and competence in producing a written analysis of the chosen topic in Italian;
■ develop confidence and competence in discussing the chosen topic in Italian in a viva (oral exam) setting;
■ encourage reflective engagement with the learning process by means of a written journal in Italian.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
■ formulate a coherent research topic relating to the culture or society of Italy;
■ select and evaluate relevant bibliographic and other resources;
■ articulate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the chosen topic, arguing and synthesizing clearly and coherently in formal written and spoken Italian;
■ use a range of advanced syntactic, idiomatic and lexical Italian structures in presenting the argument in written and spoken form;
■ reflect on the learning process in writing and in oral discussion.
