This course introduces the main actors, themes and stylistic developments in nineteenth-century German art and design. Its focus is chronological and particular attention is paid to the complex relationship between art and (national) identity during an age that experienced tremendous socio-political change and uncertainty.
10 x 1 hr lecture; 1 x 1hr seminar per week over 10 weeks as scheduled in MyCampus. This is one of the Honours options in History of Art and may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on MyCampus.
Essay (3,000 words) - 80%

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
This course will provide the opportunity to:
■ Analyse German art and design in the context of larger socio-political developments in nineteenth-century Germany, with a particular focus on national identity.
■ Assess and critique the complicated relationship between German culture, the styles of expression that were deemed as most desirable by German institutions and the emergence of the historical avant-garde.
■ Examine the historiography of German nineteenth-century art and design.
■ Prepare students for senior honours study by fostering their abilities to work with visual material and historical sources.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Identify and explain key works of art and design discussed in the course.
■ Evaluate the iconographies, styles and sources for nineteenth-century German art and design.
■ Recognise and appraise fundamental art historical texts on the period.
■ Appraise the relationship between German art & design and national identity at specific historical moments.
■ Conduct independent research on a chosen topic and construct a logical argument in essay form.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
