Short Description

The course addresses memory, trauma and history in contemporary literature and culture, which emerged out of experience of war, repression, and conflict in a variety of cultural contexts. The course engages with different methodological approaches to examine these topics in various literary and non-literary discourses and social/cultural rituals.

Assessment

Essay (2,000 words) - 50%

Group presentation, within which each student in the group will talk for c5 minutes (15% group mark and 15% individual mark) - 30%

Portfolio - Reading/viewing journal (3,000 words) - 20%

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ explore issues of memory and trauma in materials drawn from a variety of cultural contexts;

■ examine various theoretical and methodological approaches to memory, trauma, and history;

■ analyse and compare different practices of remembrance across cultures and discourses;

■ conduct group work as well as individual writing tasks.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ evaluate selected historical events and their significance today for different European and/or non-European communities;

■ analyse different types of discourses and social/cultural practices related to history and memory;

■ apply appropriate theoretical approaches and methods to a wide range of texts and visual material, taking into consideration their social, cultural and generic contexts;

■ identify and evaluate relevant secondary reading material and other resources;

■ work effectively in a team to deliver a shared project;

■ make appropriate use of primary and secondary material in constructing written and oral arguments.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
