This course consolidates and enhances those linguistic skills acquired in Catalan I, and enables the student to engage in critical reading of selected Catalan texts.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Written project (800 words) to be submitted at the start of week 1 of semester 2 - 30%

■ 20-minute oral examination in week 6 of semester 2 - 30%

■ 90-minute written examination at the end of Semester 2 - 40%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the written project, but an extension to the deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

■ An invigilated online oral examination as an alternative to the oral examination.

■ There is no alternative to the written examination, but extra time and/or a separate room can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for examination adjustments).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor. 

It is the default expectation that all courses will offer opportunities for reassessment or deferred assessment. Where it is not possible to offer this in some assessment components, the grade achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade, and any exceptions for this course are described below.

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ enhance students' language skills and knowledge of the grammar and syntax of the Catalan language, building on Catalan 1 or equivalent prior learning;

■ introduce further areas of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions;

■ enable students to acquire the necessary communication skills to cope with problem-solving situations which can occur in everyday life.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

• express themselves in written and spoken Catalan in a clear and grammatical way, using certain grammatical structures correctly at a level appropriate to the material covered in the course;

• communicate on familiar and routine matters requiring a direct exchange of information;

• give answers to problem-solving situations using the appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary;

• describe aspects of their background, environment and immediate needs and engage in conversation over a range of topics;

• demonstrate understanding of oral and written materials at a level appropriate to the material covered in the course, i.e. understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment);

• demonstrate an exemplary command of the Catalan vocabulary and structures covered throughout the course;

• demonstrate their ability to produce extended written work in Catalan.
