The course will introduce students to the key concepts, methods, and applications of economics to health and health care. The course will investigate core theories underpinning health economics, examine related empirical evidence to these theories, and stimulate students to critically think about the major challenges health care systems face and how health economics can play a role in understanding and mitigating those challenges.

The course aims to enable students to:

■ Understand key economic theories and techniques in approaching issues of health and health care

■ Critically examine empirical evidence related to the economic theories

■ Apply these theories and techniques to critically analyse real-world issues in health and health care

■ Appreciate different perspectives on health and health care issues 

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Explain and apply core theories and techniques underpinning health economics, and critically evaluate related empirical evidence to these theories

2. Analyse and critique multiple perspectives on health and health care issues and the limitations of economic theory and techniques

3. Apply economic theories and techniques and collect empirical evidence to critically analyse real-world issues in health and health care

4. Work collaboratively in a group to produce a combined piece of coursework, by liaising with other class members, allocating tasks and co-ordinating group meetings.
