Short Description

This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to teach design and technical subjects within core areas of the design and technologies curriculum. The school experience will comprise of a block 6 weeks in a secondary school.

Assessment

A pass fail/grade is awarded for an assessed lesson and on the basis of a Principal Teacher's Report. This report will reflect performance across all outcomes during the placement. Failure in this report will require a retrieval placement to be successfully completed.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide the professional practice context that will allow student teachers to develop and extend their professional knowledge, understanding, skills, professional values and personal commitment. Students will join a department for a five-week block placement. This course allows an introduction to classroom teaching that is gradual, starting with assisting the teacher in working with pupils on a one to one basis and progressing from there to group and finally whole class teaching.

 

This course supports the achievement of all elements of the Standard for Provisional Registration and ILOs are drawn from the particular aspects on which students will focus for this placement.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to demonstrate:

 

■ Knowledge and understanding of the nature and relevant areas of the curriculum and its development with particular reference to BGE and national phases;

■ How to plan for effective teaching and learning across different contexts and experiences;

■ Understanding of how to match the level of curricular areas to the needs of all learners;

■ Understanding of the importance of using and designing materials for teaching and learning to stimulate, support and challenge all learners;

■ Knowledge of how to promote and support the cognitive, emotional, social and physical wellbeing of all learners in their care, and show commitment to raising these learners' expectations of themselves;

■ Knowledge and understanding of learning theories and the importance of these in planning, teaching and learning;

■ Knowledge of how to use the principles of assessment, record assessments appropriately, use assessment information to review progress, inform teaching and learning, and identify next steps; 

■ Understanding of current, relevant legislation and guidance such as the Standards in Scotland's Schools etc Act (2000), Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004, the Equality Act 2010 and GIRFEC;

■ Awareness of and respect for a school's distinctive ethos;

■ Use of communication methods, including a variety of media, to promote and develop positive relationships and to motivate and sustain the interest of all learners;

■ Use of a range of teaching strategies and resources to meet the needs and abilities of learners; 

■ Awareness of barriers to learning, recognising when to seek further advice in relation to all learners' needs;

■ Awareness of how to work effectively in partnership in order to promote learning and wellbeing; 

■ Awareness of how to create a safe, caring and purposeful learning environment;

■ Awareness of how to develop positive relationships and positive behaviour strategies. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must demonstrate professional behaviour and achieve a pass grade from school based placement partners. Students must meet the GTCS requirements for attendance during placement.
