Short Description

Year 5 of BDS Programme.

In-house:

Every other week, alternating with outreach. Students have eight sessions in each of the following core units (16 weeks in total):

Crown and Bridge, Minor Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Paediatric Dentistry (at Bridgeton Community Dental Clinic), Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Consultant Clinics (1), Consultant Clinics (2)


Outreach:


Every other week, alternating with in-house teaching. Students commute to one community clinic over a period of 16 weeks and also attend a residential location.

Assessment

Final Examination: Part 3 (OSCE - DENT5005). (Part 1 & 2 of Final Examinations are taken in BDS4).

Course Aims

To provide opportunities for expanding and consolidating clinical skills and supporting knowledge in primary and secondary dental care environments.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Learning outcomes are expressed at three levels, and are mapped to the General Dental Council's publication, Preparing for Practice - Dental Team Learning Outcomes for Registration (2015 revised edition).

 

Be competent at: students should have a sound theoretical knowledge and understanding of the subject together with an adequate clinical experience to be able to resolve clinical problems encountered, independently, or without assistance.

Have knowledge of: students should have a sound theoretical knowledge of the subject, but need have only a limited clinical/practical experience.

Be familiar with: students should have a basic understanding of the subject, but need not have direct clinical experience or be expected to carry out procedures independently.

 

Clinical Skills

1.10 be familiar with the principles of treatment of dento-facial anomalies including the common orthodontic/maxillofacial procedures involved

Practical Procedures

2.3e be competent at the provision of crowns, porcelain laminate veneers and inlays/onlays for adult patients

2.3f be competent to restore primary teeth in a child

2.4d be competent in the management of patients requiring non-surgical root canal treatment using rotary and hand instrumentation

2.4e have knowledge of the diagnoses of failed root canal treatments and when to consider non-surgical root canal retreatment

2.4f have knowledge of when surgical endodontics may be required

2.5d be competent at the clinical techniques required for provision of fixed bridgework

2.11f be competent at raising a mucoperiosteal flap and suturing the soft tissues

2.11g be familiar with soft tissue biopsy techniques

2.15i have knowledge of management of infection control and legal aspects of undertaking infection control procedures in primary care

2.15j have knowledge of national and local policies on infection control in dental practice

2.17a be competent at basic life-support

Patient Management

4.6d be familiar with the principles of management of complex restorative cases, recognise the limitations of their current level of ability and the need for referral

4.6e be competent to assess a patient's level of anxiety, experience and expectations in respect of dental care; and at assessing the patient's requirement for general anaesthesia or sedation, in accord with contemporary GDC regulations

4.8 have knowledge of the assessment of patients for conscious sedation and general anaesthesia (see also: 2.16 have knowledge of inhalational and intravenous conscious sedation techniques in clinical practice; and 4.6e)

4.9 be competent at informing patients or guardians of the indications, contraindications, limitations, risks and benefits of conscious sedation and general anaesthesia (see also: 2.16 have knowledge of inhalational and intravenous conscious sedation techniques in clinical practice; and 4.6e)

4.10e have knowledge of the integration of psychological and sedation management (see also: 2.16 have knowledge of inhalational and intravenous conscious sedation techniques in clinical practice)

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Successful completion of DENT5005 (OSCE) at Grade D or above plus successful completion of other course requirements.

 

DENT5004 is the overarching course for the BDS5 year and includes all other course requirements. This includes assessment of competence: attainment of 'competence' in relation to the specified Competence Assessments, together with demonstration of satisfactory progress when measured by both volume and quality of clinical experience as determined by the Clinical Development Panel in accordance with guidance in the Course Information Document.
