This course provides the opportunity to study the style of classical Greek prose authors and to apply such analysis in translating complex passages of English prose into Greek of the appropriate style and register.

One hour per week over two terms; This is one of the honours options in Greek and may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on mycampus

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course provides students the opportunity to:
- enhance their knowledge of Greek grammar and vocabulary
- recognise the difference in structure and idiom between Greek and English
- translate English of various styles into classical Attic Greek clearly and accurately
- compare Greek texts of differing styles and periods
- understand the uses of Greek prose style in different contexts and for different purposes

By the end of the course you should be able to:
- recognise the principal elements of Greek prose style
- identify the differences between prose of different periods, registers and contexts
- explain the purpose of stylistic features in the set texts
- identify the essential meaning of a passage of English and communicate it in Greek, observing the various constraints and opportunities of classical Greek
- create a Greek passage that is grammatically and syntactically correct, stylistically appropriate, and readily comprehensible
- choose methods of expression in Greek that are clear and idiomatic
- use the register and style in Greek appropriate to the English text translated

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
