This course provides a pedagogically-driven credit-bearing framework for the work done by undergraduate students at the University of Glasgow as part of the Iris Project (Glasgow), through which they can develop their skills and understanding and reflect on their classroom experiences. Students on the course will deliver Latin to a primary or secondary class, over the academic year, in a pair and with the support and mentoring of a qualified teacher; and engage in reflection around their experiences in so doing and the skills and understanding they have gained.

Portfolio (5,000 words) - 60%: students will prepare a portfolio describing their experiences in their allocated school, reflecting on the classes they have delivered and the outreach activity involved, and reflecting on their skills development during the course.

Presentation of 20 minutes - 40%: students will deliver a joint presentation, working in the pairs in which they taught, exploring an issue or problem that arose in their teaching. These presentations will be delivered as part of a one-day symposium on the course towards its end.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ experience classroom teaching in a structured and supported way

■ reflect on the pedagogical experience, whether or not with a view to a teaching career

■ explore outreach work by universities in schools and to reflect on the conditions for success

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ present discipline specific material (elementary Latin) to primary or secondary audiences

■ analyse the process of class planning and preparation

■ work effectively as part of a team to deliver specific learning outcomes

■ identify good practice in teaching and opportunities for enhancement

■ identify and chart their own development in terms of skills and understanding

■ reflect upon the opportunities and pitfalls of outreach work by universities in schools

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
