Short Description

This course consists of 2 separate projects: a Pumped Storage Hydro Scheme which runs over the first part of the semester; a geotechnical design project involving retaining wall design and slope stability which runs over the second half of the semester.

Timetable

Three to four afternoon sessions each week for approximately 4 weeks, with some guest lectures mid semester.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to:

■ develop students' research capability, technical skills and problem solving abilities to tackle a range of civil engineering design briefs

■ propose innovative design solutions and report them in a clear, structured format and concise manner

■ develop students' knowledge and understanding of the principles and theory presented in Hydraulics 3, and Geotechnical Engineering 3 to provide sustainable solutions to engineering problems based on "real life" scenarios

■ encourage students to take a holistic view of their learning so that they apply knowledge and understanding from a range of different areas of the curriculum in order to complete design briefs successfully. Skills developed should include brief analysis, engineering design and technical report writing

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply the principles and methods of analysis and design presented in Hydraulics and Geotechnical Engineering lectures to develop design solutions to "real-life" civil engineering problems

■ Specifically, research, technically evaluate and propose design solutions for a Pumped Storage Hydro scheme and a railway structure, applying a wide range of engineering skills and operating within the context of maximising sustainable design principles and minimising the carbon footprint

■ Write an engineering report (technical commentary), produce high-quality presentation slides and deliver presentations to a range of professional experts.
