Course Aims

The aims of this course are to:

■ develop a broad understanding of the aircraft design process, including awareness of the importance of market forces and role of airworthiness requirements;

■ appreciation of the environmental and sustainability issues associated with aircraft design

■ work in a small group developing a new concept aircraft to meet specified requirements

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ use an iterative aircraft design process to create a basic conceptual design of an aircraft;

■ assess the sustainability and environmental issues which influence aircraft design and propulsion systems making appropriate selections for a concept design;

■ compose a group report that covers the conceptual design of an environmentally friendly aircraft;

■ analyse and evaluate the performance of a concept aircraft design to meet particular flight requirements for a specific role; 

■ summarise the aircraft design and performance in written and oral presentations.
