Main Assessment In: December

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to further develop the students' knowledge and understanding of engineering application, practice and the manufacture and their relation to engineering design.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ describe basic engineering components, materials and manufacturing processes;

■ discuss the interaction between manufacturing process and design and cost of components;

■ produce engineering drawings to recognised engineering standards;

■ use materials and process selection theory and the associated Edupack software;

■ understanding theory for costing manufacture processes

■ understand the fundamentals of two basic manufacturing processes (casting and sheet forming)

■ describe applications and limitations of inspection techniques.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must attend the degree examination (worth 70% of the final mark)

Students must attend the timetabled laboratory classes.

Students must attempt a minimum of 8 of the 10 Moodle quizzes on the course (worth 30% of the final mark).

Students must attend at least one in-person Q&A session (and register attendance)

Note that these are minimum requirements: good students will achieve far higher participation/submission rates.  Any student who misses an assessment or a significant number of classes because of illness or other good cause should report this by completing a MyCampus absence report.
