Short Description

This course builds on course 1 to develop depth of knowledge and understanding relating to working safely with a range of materials and machinery in the workshop environment.


One day per week (typically 3 hours morning; 3 hours afternoon).

Practical skills assessment takes place across the workshop elements and includes submission of a record of work.

Course Aims

This course aims to support students to learn the practical workshop skills to enable them to teach key aspects of the technologies curriculum in schools. The course will support students to develop knowledge of a range of common technological materials, and to understand safe working practices and the need to follow statutory legislation in the workshop environment.


The course provides the knowledge and skills to enable students to meet the following aspects of the Standard for Provisional Registration:


2.1.1 Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

■ Design and manufacture a wooden table, to include drawers using traditional construction.

■ Draw to scale in orthographic and/or isometric all possible solutions.

■ Prepare cutting lists.

■ Demonstrate knowledge of the function and purpose of woodworking joints and be able to show correct marking out and manufacture of these joints.

■ Demonstrate correct methods of clamping and gluing frames.

■ Demonstrate understanding of the correct and adjustment of woodworking hand tools.

■ Practise correct and safe use of woodworking machines and portable power tools.

■ Practise the correct setting adjustment and use of engineering hand tools.

■ Demonstrate safe working practices in the use of machinery.

■ Show knowledge of correct use of machine tools in particular: the four jaws on the centre lathe, offset turning, taper tiring using mandrel;

■ Demonstrate knowledge of how to use hand forging tools.

■ Demonstrate knowledge of sheet metal methods.

■ Show knowledge and understanding of circuit building and principles of pneumatics.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must have an 80% attendance or better at all timetabled classes. Students must achieve at least a D3 grade. Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. Students must complete all workshop tasks.
