Short Description

This course extends knowledge and understanding of electronics with specific focus on control systems and microprocessors. Students will build skills and knowledge relating to selected microprocessors and gain experience using these in the design and development of solutions to a range of problems. Skills in systems and coding syntax will be developed.


Weekly, 1 hour lecture, 1 hour practical class.

Course Aims

To provide an understanding of digital systems and circuit electronics building on the material covered in Electronics 1. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of specific digital systems, circuit architecture and microprocessors.

This course enables students to have the knowledge to meet the GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration as follows:


2.1.1 Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate knowledge and correct use of the terminology of microprocessor and digital systems.

■ Identify and describe the main blocks within a microprocessor

■ Demonstrate knowledge of and skills in the microprocessor system design cycle.

■ Apply skills and knowledge in programming at least one mainstream microprocessor platform.

■ Interface selected microprocessor platform(s) with a variety of IO devices.

■ Describe microprocessor operation.

■ Apply knowledge of digital number systems and processing.

■ Execute systems that involve analogue to digital conversion.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must have an 80% attendance or better at all timetabled classes. Students must achieve at least a D3 grade. Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
