Short Description

This course develops understanding of the theory and practice of design, including folio production and modelling. During the course students will develop folio, modelling, group working, research and presentation skills. Building on the first year course, Design T1, there will be an emphasis on such aspects as conceptual design, business aspects of design, materials selection, aesthetic design, and design analysis/evaluation methods. Students will also develop a critical awareness of current literature on design and design education. Students will be required to integrate, in the context of design problem solving, a range of knowledge and skills drawn from across other areas of their programme of study


Weekly over 11 weeks, 1 hour lecture, 2 hour workshop.

Students will develop an individual portfolio and a group portfolio.

Course Aims

The aims of this course are to further develop students' understanding and application of relevant design theories, principles and concepts as part of design thinking and response to a brief.


This course enables students to have the knowledge to meet the GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration as follows:


2.1.1 Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, student will be able to:


■ Demonstrate and critically evaluate knowledge of relevant design theories, principles and concepts as part of their design thinking, utilising specific metrics and parameters in relation to product re-engineering.

■ Utilise appropriate specialist design vocabulary to communicate their design thinking and reasoning.

■ Analyse and respond to a design brief and providing evidence-based justification as part of that response.

■ Generate creative design concepts, demonstrating principles of reverse engineering, underpinned by relevant research and investigation.

■ Demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of important design factors that influence design showing critical awareness of their relevance in different design contexts.

■ Effectively deploy a range of modelling techniques to test and realise, ideas, concepts or solutions in 3D form with a particular emphasis on functional relationships.

■ Support design reasoning and decision-making.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must have an 80% attendance or better at all timetabled classes. Students must achieve at least a D3 grade. Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
