Short Description

This course introduces students to graphic illustration. Students will use a variety of media to produce visual representation of concepts and ideas in the field of technical graphics.

Course Aims

This course aims to address the development of essential Graphics knowledge, understanding and skills required by technology teachers in relation to the secondary technology curriculum. The course also provides technology students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support their design and engineering education.

This knowledge will also support students to meet aspects of the following GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration:

  2.1.1: Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development.

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

3.1.1 Plan coherent, progressive and stimulating teaching programmes which match learners' needs and abilities

3.1.2 Communicate effectively and interact productively with learners, individually and collectively.


This course also aims to develop the following University of Glasgow graduate attributes across the academic, personal and social dimensions of each: subject specialists; investigative; effective communicators; confident; reflective learners.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:


· Develop a range of graphics skills, knowledge and understanding.
Be able to interpret and produce graphically based technological communication at an appropriate level.
Demonstrate foundational graphics skills for design and the communication of production and manufacturing

Be competent to interpret a range of graphical information in the context of illustration, production and

Be able to apply a 3D modelling approach as a context for design.
Be able to generate a model in response to a design brief and render it for presentation.
Be able to work independently in response to a design brief using computer based programmes.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. 80% attendance rule applies. Students must achieve a minimum of D3.
