Short Description

This course provides students with an introduction to design, design theory and design techniques. It also provides a first engagement with the history of design and schools of design


3 hours (1hour lecture, 2 hour workshop) per week across 11 weeks over two semesters.

Students will submit a portfolio developed and produced individually (60%); students will also work in groups to co-produce a development document and physical prototype (40%).

Course Aims

This course will develop knowledge of design factors, principles and theory. In particular it will develop the following knowledge, understanding and skills:


■ Design awareness.

■ Design thinking and process skills.

■ Skills in soft modelling of concepts.

■ Understanding of the design process through student design experience and reflection in real-world contexts.

■ Creative and innovative design skills.

■ Communications skills within a design framework.

■ Overall design capability for design tasks in years 2 and 3.


This course enables students to have the knowledge to meet the GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration as follows:


2.1.1 Have knowledge and understanding of the nature of the curriculum and its development

2.1.2 Have knowledge and understanding of the relevant area(s) of pre-school, primary or secondary curriculum

3.1.1 Plan coherent, progressive and stimulating teaching programmes which match learners' needs and abilities

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:


■ Outline their knowledge of relevant foundational design theories, principles and concepts.

■ Utilise appropriate specialist design vocabulary to communicate their design thinking.

■ Analyse and respond appropriately to a design brief.

■ Generate creative design concepts drawing on relevant research and investigation.

■ Demonstrate understanding of foundational design factors that influence design and explain their relevance in difference design contexts.

■ Apply a range of modelling techniques to test and realise ideas, concepts or solutions in 3D form.

■ Develop and demonstrated understanding of the ways in which design folios are integral to design thinking.

■ Evaluate design concepts, products and systems utilising specific metrics and parameters in relation to designing for people.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. 80% attendance rule applies. Students must achieve a minimum of D3.
