This course traces the participation of women in the social and political developments of a turbulent time in nineteenth century Spain. It covers three main blocks, arranged chronologically: the Civil War over female accession to the throne; the question of the cultural dominance of the middle classes highlighting the activism of working class women; and the debate about women's suffrage which led to the inclusion of women's vote in the constitution of the Second Spanish Republic (1931).

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below.
This course will provide the opportunity to:
■ examine the ways in which women actively participated in the making of modern Spain during the period leading from the abolition of the absolute monarchy to the proclamation of the Second Republic;
■ acquire generic skills of visual and textual analysis and of research in digital archives;
■ develop research skills and interests that will provide a basis for progression to postgraduate work if desired.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ understand women's participation in major social and political developments during a pivotal period of Spanish history;
■ work with the main Spanish digital press archives (Hemeroteca Digital, Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa HistÃ³rica);
■ analyse texts (in the broadest sense), showing awareness of their relation to the social, historical, and generic context in which they were produced, and present the results orally and in writing;
■ engage critically with secondary reading.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
