This course is intended for those who have previously completed Basic Greek for Honours 1, Greek 1A or some other appropriate course in Greek. The course will help students to build on their previous knowledge of Greek and further develop the ability of students to read and translate passages of Greek, so that on completion of this course they will be equipped to progress to reading original Greek texts.

Lectures: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 11 am over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus; weekly one hour seminar (choice of times) over 8 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

This course aims to:

■ extend students' familiarity with key concepts in the study of Greek language

■ extend students' knowledge of the forms and structure of Greek

■ extend students' knowledge of Greek vocabulary

■ enable students to comprehend and translate into English more advanced Greek sentences and passages

■ introduce students to reading original Greek texts in an adapted form

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ apply their knowledge of Greek grammar, morphology and syntax, and specified Greek vocabulary, to translate simple and complex sentences from Greek into idiomatic English,

■ supply the correct forms of individual Greek words and simple phrases when asked,

■ translate a simple unprepared passage of continuous Greek prose into idiomatic English,

■ explain the linguistic features met in reading both prepared and unprepared Greek passages and sentences.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
